MULLET

The whole shape is important from every angle.

The front, the sides and the back all need to connect.

When you turn your head, the haircut should still look balanced.

From the front, the frame around the face is especially important.

A mullet usually removes much more hair from the sides, so the face becomes more exposed.

That is one of the biggest characteristics of the style.

Because there is less hair covering the sides of the face, the balance of the face becomes very clear.

Traditionally, a smaller or slimmer face can make a mullet easier to wear.

But I don’t think that should become a rule.

If you really like the style, you should be able to wear it.

As a hairstylist, of course I think about face shape, head shape and balance.

But design is not only about what other people think suits you.

Sometimes wearing the style you really want is more important.

The back of a mullet can be designed in different ways.

Sometimes I keep more weight in the back and create a slightly more graduated shape.

Sometimes the weight point can sit lower.

But with many Asian head shapes, I often bring the weight point a little higher.

The head shape is different, so the same haircut can sit very differently on different people.

You cannot just copy the same balance from another head.

You have to adjust it.

The undercut is very important for this.

It gives us control over the amount of hair and the overall silhouette.

If the hair is extremely thick, we can remove a lot of weight underneath while keeping the surface strong.

If the hair is fine, we can keep more hair and protect the areas that need density.

The depth of the undercut depends on the person.

I decide it after looking at the hair, the density and the head shape.

Texture is also very important in a mullet.

But a mullet has more solid surfaces, so I don’t want to break everything up.

Sometimes the most important thing is knowing where not to put texture.

For example, if someone already has fine hair around the fringe, I don’t want to thin that area too much.

I want to keep that part strong.

Another area might be very thick and need a lot of weight removed.

So every section needs to be treated differently.

Some people have less hair around the front.Some are thinner around the temples.Some have a lot of hair at the back and much less on top.

You have to see those differences while you are cutting.

That is why I work panel by panel.

Sometimes I use slicing.Sometimes point cutting.Sometimes I remove weight underneath.And sometimes I leave an area almost untouched.

You cannot texture a mullet in the same way everywhere.

If you do, it can go wrong very quickly.

A mullet is also a great haircut for color design.

Because there are more solid and straighter surfaces, color placement can show very clearly.

You can create panels.You can create blocks.You can use contrast.

You can place color in one specific part of the haircut and really see the design.

That is one of the reasons a mullet is so interesting for color.

For me, a good mullet is about controlling the whole shape.

The amount of hair.The undercut.The weight.The texture.The face.And the balance from every angle.

There is no single mullet that works for everyone.

You have to look at the person in front of you and build the haircut for them.
