What Is a Face-Framing Cut?
A face-framing cut uses shorter sections around the face to change how the haircut sits from the front. The position of the first layer, its angle and its connection to the rest of the hair determine whether the result feels soft, sharp, light or dramatic.
Face Framing is not a single technique. It can frame both the jawline and the face, or focus only on the jawline without creating a strong frame around the face. Hime Cut details can also be incorporated into the design. The direction changes completely depending on whether the client has bangs, which makes the consultation extremely important. The stylist must carefully discuss the desired balance, length, and overall silhouette before cutting. Length control is especially delicate. The first cut is usually made at least 3 cm longer than the client’s requested finishing point, allowing space for texture and refinement. Cutting directly at the requested length and then adding texture can make the result appear much shorter than expected. Face Framing is a precise and highly sensitive technique, where even a small difference in length can completely change the impression of the style.
Who Does It Suit?
Face framing can work for almost anyone.
Rather than being one specific haircut, it is one of the most versatile options you can add to an existing style.
It can be combined with butterfly layers, wolf cuts, long layers, or even used more strongly around the jaw to create a completely different balance around the face.
For example, with softer Asian-style butterfly layers, we can keep the overall layering subtle while adding stronger face framing only around the front.
With a wolf cut, the back can keep its stronger layered shape while the front is customised with face or jaw framing.
That flexibility is what makes face framing such a powerful option.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does face framing work with any hair type?
Hair texture does make a difference.
Some hair will fall into shape naturally, while other hair may need a little more styling to make the face-framing sections sit exactly where you want them.
But sometimes that one extra action is what makes the difference.
Most people will not spend even a few extra minutes shaping the hair around their face.
If you do, even something small can make your haircut look much more intentional and individual.
